Evanston, IL – August 13, 2020 – The Waterloo Police Department is considering an alternative patch for their uniforms. Reportedly, they are taking the suggestions of the public for a secondary patch, to be worn by its officers.

The current patch that was worn for over 60 years now features a red griffin (a mythical beast that has the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle).

According to the Waterloo Police Department’s, its former police chief, Robert Wright, in 1964, conducted research in an effort to come up with a patch to replace the older triangular patch that consisted of only the text “Waterloo Police Department”.

Police Chief Robert Wright wanted to find a patch that would be unique as well as symbolic of their police work. It was during this search that Chief Wright came across the red griffin.

A griffin is a Greek mythological creature that symbolizes vigilance and means to act as a guardian of priceless possessions.

The older design has a bright golden background to a green-eyed red griffin with black letters and border. Waterloo Daily Courier Artist, Jack Bender, was chosen by Chief Wright to design the griffin patch.

Since then, the red griffin patch has been part of the Waterloo Police Department’s uniform. So far, the Police Department has uploaded eight design alternatives for the patch on their Facebook page to seek the public’s opinion.
