Evanston, IL – September 04, 2020 – Officials on August 27th confirmed that U.S. Space Force will also wear Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) as their official uniform like their Army and Air Force counterparts.
This means the Space Force members will put on a full-color U.S. flag patch on their left sleeve, a grade insignia, and an occupational badge. However, the name and service tapes will use a space blue embroidery, unlike the spice brown embroidery used by the Air Force.
The blue name tapes will also be put up on the back of patrol caps and officers will have their insignia included on the front. These will either be embroidered in spice brown for 2nd lieutenants and majors, or space blue for the other officer ranks.
The guidance also states that boots, t-shirts, and fleeces will be in coyote brown in color. While socks may be in green, gloves, scarves, earmuffs maybe coyote brown or black.
“Our uniforms are the first visual cue of our identity as a service,” Chief Master Sgt. Roger A. Towberman, U.S Space Force senior enlisted advisor, said in a news release Thursday. “Adopting the OCP worn in the joint environment reflects our role in the joint warfighting effort, and we incorporated space Force-specific colors and configuration to establish our own independent identity.”
Space Force members also have the option to either sew or Velcro insignia and tapes onto their OCPs, as long as all the components are uniform.
Space Force has until April 1, 2021, to make sure their uniforms comply with the new uniform design regulations. This deadline also coincides with the Air Force’s deadline to transition from Airman Battle Uniform (ABU) to OCPs.
Looking at how the events have transpired, it may be safe to say that the First Lady did not have her hand in designing the Space Force uniforms after all.
